SpaceX teased on Friday, about the First Tourist on the Moon, which will be revealed on Monday.
And as teased, Elon Musk, today, revealed that Yusaku Maezawa will be the world’s first private passenger to fly around the Moon.
Yusaku is CEO of Japan’s largest online fashion mall, and is 18th richest person in Japan having net worth of $3 Billion, according to Forbes Business Magazine.
Until now, only Americans have left Earth’s orbit and twelve walked on the lunar surface. Yusaku will be the first lunar traveler since the last US Apollo mission in 1972 and the first Tourist on the Moon.
Dennis Tito, American businessman, was the first space tourist to fly on a Russian spaceship to the ISS, which cost him $20 million back in 2001.
This is Yusaku’s lifelong dream and he said “Ever since I was a kid, I have loved the Moon” at the SpaceX HQ. He paid an unknown amount for this trip.
He is also inviting 6-8 personally loved artists on this mission to fly on (Big Falcon Rocket) BFR SpaceX rocket around the Moon as soon as 2023. All of the artists will get a free ride and will be asked to create something after returning to the Earth, which will insipire the dreamer within all of us, according to Yusaku.
Yusaku is also an art curator and the love of him for art made him to take this decision. He also announced, last year, the acquisition of a Jean-Michel Basquiat masterpiece worth $110.5 million.
Elon Musk describes Yusaku as bravest and the best adventurer while feeling honoured for Yusaku to step forward and choose SpaceX.
Elon also cautioned by saying “This is dangerous, to be clear. This is no walk in the park; When you are pushing the frontier, it is not a sure thing. There is a chance something could go wrong.”
When asked by reporters that if Elon would join this trip, he said, “As far as me going, I’m not sure. He (Yusaku) did suggest like maybe that I would join on this trip. I don’t know.” then added “All right. Maybe we will both be on it”.
